House Republicans Voted To Advance Impeaching Mayorkas

Alejandro Mayorkas would be the first cabinet official to be impeached in nearly 150 years. He would also become only the second cabinet official ever to be impeached in U.S. history.

House Republicans voted Tuesday to advance impeaching Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas.

On Sunday, House GOPs released the impeachment articles against Mayorkas accusing him of “willful and systemic refusal to comply with the law” and “breach of public trust” over the administration’s handling of the migrant crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

After nearly 15 hours of discussions, the House Homeland Security Committee voted 18-15 along party lines to advance the two articles to the House floor.

Further debate and votes on the articles are now expected to take place next week.

If agreed upon, Mayorkas would be the first cabinet official to be impeached in nearly 150 years. He would also become only the second cabinet official ever to be impeached in U.S. history.
