Texas Gov. Greg Abbott Signs New Bill Into Law Regarding Illegal U.S. Entry
The bill is set to take effect in March, but is expected to be challenged by the federal government over the powers of immigration.
Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has signed a new bill.
‘Senate Bill 4’ makes it a criminal offense for illegal entry into Texas from a foreign nation for repeat offenders who could receive a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years.
The legislation will allow any Texas law enforcement officer to arrest those who are suspected of entering the country illegally. After being detained, they will either agree to a judge’s order making them leave the U.S. or be charged with misdemeanor charges of illegal entry under the new law.
The goal of this bill is to stop illegal migrants from entering the state after a key increase has been witnessed recently. It is set to take effect in March, but is expected to be challenged by the federal government over the powers of immigration.
