Texas Gov. Greg Abbott To Sign A New Border Bill

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said he wouldn't be surprised if it is challenged in court. An immigration advocacy group has already threatened to sue the governor if he signs the bill.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott is expected to a sign a new bill.

The measure would make it a new state crime for entering Texas illegally and aims to give law enforcement the power to arrest migrants while appointing judges the power to issue orders to remove violators from the U.S. to Mexico.

The bill has brought fear to the Latin community in Texas, which makes up 40% of the state’s population. Civil rights organizations and immigration advocacy groups have called the measure ‘anti-immigrant’ and warn that it could lead to racial profiling of Latinos, not just on the border but across the state. Around 30 former immigration judges also opposed the bill saying it is unlawful.

When asked about concerns over the measure, Abbott said he wouldn’t be surprised if it is challenged in court. An immigration advocacy group has already threatened to sue the governor if he signs the bill.
