Peeps Will No Longer Contain A Popular Food Additive

The marshmallow candy will have the chemical removed from almost all items.

The increase in backlash against a food additive has affected the recipe of a popular holiday treat.

Just Born Quality Confections announced Peeps will no longer contain Red Dye No. 3. The marshmallow candy will have the chemical removed from almost all items. However, the change is not happening immediately.

Starting next year the chemical will be removed from all Peeps except for two colors, Pink and Lavender. Both will still contain Red No. 3 as they comply with FDA guidelines and use only FD&C certified color.

An updated ingredient list will be released on store shelves in the coming months. The move comes as opposers argue the additive can cause cancer as well as other harm.

California recently became the first U.S. state to ban Red Dye No. 3 from all products.
