A handful of University of Florida students were injured Monday evening after chaos erupted in a large crowd.
Around 1,000 people gathered at the ‘United With Israel’ candlelight vigil at the university to pay respects to those who have lost their lives in the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas.
Someone in the crowd fainted or fell which prompted people to run for safety. Some also feared they heard gunshots, though no shots were fired. As the crowd erupted into panic mode many fell and tripped over each other.
Over 30 students were taken to hospitals for injuries sustained during the stampede-like incident. Most of those injured are believed to have suffered bruises and scrapes with some suffering concussions, gashes requiring stitches and at least one broken leg.
The hosts of the vigil shared they will attempt another similar event at a later date.
