There’s been a lot of buzz lately about the benefits of pickle juice, so Audra decides to dig into the topic and brings some to the show for sampling!  It was a tough shot for B.J. to swallow but took the challenge to bottoms up!  Here’s the “dill” on pickle juice.  It contains electrolytes in the form of a lot of sodium and some potassium and magnesium.  Recent reports indicate that pickle juice stops muscle cramps within 35 seconds.  Athletes are drinking it to rehydrate,  and often in the form of popular brand of pickle shots.  But the use of pickle juice in sports goes way back.  Two decades ago, Andy Reid credited pickle juice as key to the Eagles beating the Cowboys in 100- degree heat.  Reid revealed he had his players drink pickle juice to cope with dehydration and muscle cramps.  Everyday people are also drinking it too for blood sugar regulation. Vinegar is a main ingredient.  In a 2015 study showed it helps regulate blood sugar in Type 2 diabetics and even non-diabetics as well.   The vinegar in pickle juice can also boost gut health.   Fermented foods help maintain a healthy digestive system, as it helps the growth of ‘good bacteria’ and ‘flora’ in one’s gut.   What to look for:  stay away from pasteurized if you are looking for the probiotic benefits,  choose a vinegar-based pickle without yellow dye and preservatives, and when possible do organic.
