Disastrous and devastating floodwaters broke through dams in Libya’s eastern city of Derna.

The chaos erupted as Mediterranean storm Daniel pounded the coast. Residents were startled by loud explosions and realized two dams outside the city had collapsed, unleashing flash floods down Wadi Derna, a river running from the mountains through the city and into the sea.

The rushing waters washed away entire neighborhoods. At least 700 bodies have been buried so far and the current death toll stands at 2,300. The toll is expected to rise while at least 10,000 people remain unaccounted for and emergency crews work to search for survivors.
