One Faculty Member Dead After UNC Shooting

The suspect, Tailei Qi, was taken into custody, but a motive behind the shooting remains unclear at this time as authorities investigate.

A shooting occurred at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on Monday that left one person dead.

Gunshots were reported shortly after 1p.m. at the school’s Caudill Laboratories. The suspect, doctoral student Tailei Qi, was taken into custody around 2:30p.m., but a motive behind the shooting remains unclear at this time as authorities investigate. He is facing charges of first-degree murder and having a gun on campus.

Investigators have not yet found the firearm that was used in the shooting and it is unknown whether or not it was legally obtained.

The university has a student body of around 32,000 along with over 4,000 faculty and 9,000 staff members. One faculty member was killed during the incident while a lock down was enforced for hours.

The name of the victim has not yet been revealed as information is still being collected and the FBI is assisting in gathering evidence.
