Three Marines Died After An Osprey Aircraft Crashed During Training Exercise

Over the weekend, an Osprey aircraft crashed during military exercises in Australia.

The 23 U.S. Marines on board the MV22B aircraft, were flying in support of Exercise Predators Run. Three died and five others were transported to the Royal Darwin Hospital to be treated for serious injuries. Northern Territory Chief Minister Natasha Fyles said some of the other Marines were treated at the scene.

It’s too soon at this time to say whether the accident was due to mechanical failure or some other issue.

The Osprey is a hybrid flown by the U.S. Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force. It is similar to a helicopter, but it can rotate its propellers forward and is faster. Since 2012, 19 people have died in crashes involving Ospreys.
