A shooting occurred in Auckland, New Zealand just before the opening of the Women’s World Cup.
Thousands of people were gathered in the city to watch New Zealand play Norway in the first game of the tournament.
The gunman opened fire on a construction site in the city’s central business district with a pump action shotgun. Three people died and several others were injured as the gunman made his way through the building.
The suspect was under home detention orders and had an exemption to work at the site so the incident was believed to be related to his work there. Therefor police found the situation did not pose a security risk to the Women’s World Cup opening ceremony, and the games went ahead as planned.
