70-Year-Old Dies After Attempting To Save His Grandson

The 70-year-old man rushed into the water to save his 9-year-old grandson who was struggling during a strong longshore current.

An elderly man died after attempting to rescue his grandson who was caught in rough waters in Pawleys Island.

On Wednesday, officers responded to a call of a possible drowning around 12:30p.m. near the Shell Road Beach Access.

70-year-old Darrell Lambert was visiting Pawleys Island from West Columbia when he got caught in a struggle attempting to rescue his 9-year-old grandson who was also struggling during a strong longshore current.

When officers arrived, they noticed good Samaritans attempting to perform first aid on the man after he was brought to shore by a person on a paddleboard who also brought the child to shore.

The man was taken to a hospital where he later died. His grandson was also taken to a hospital for salt water inhalation, but is said to be okay.
