Socastee Swing Bridge Remains Closed After Fatal Crash
SCDOT will provide an update on the condition of the bridge once the inspection is finished.
On Monday, a car traveling West on Dick Pond Road ran off the road and hit the Socastee swing bridge before crashing into the Intracoastal Waterway.
23-year-old Demeatrius Chandler Jr. was the only occupant of the vehicle and was killed in the crash.
Crews worked to pull the vehicle out of the water and an Horry County dive team was able to recover Chandler Jr..
The structure remains closed as inspectors look for possible damage.
In the meantime, traffic is being detoured using Highway 544.
Motorists are asked to use caution in the area to keep crews safe and allow fellow travelers to adjust to the detour route.
