Fort Polk Renamed After WWI Soldier

The renaming of the base is the latest U.S. military installation to be re-designated as part of an effort to strip Confederate leaders of honor.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Army officially renamed Louisiana’s Fort Polk military base.

The base has been retitled ‘Joint Readiness Training Center’ and ‘Fort Johnson’ in honor of SGT. William Johnson, an African American U.S. soldier during World War I who fought off around two dozen Germans alone, killing at least four.

It was previously named after Confederate Lt. Cmdr. General Leonidas Polk.
