N.C. Governor Issues ‘State Of Emergency’ Over School Choice Bill
N.C. Governor Roy Cooper said that it's clear Republican legislature is aiming to "choke the life out of public education."
North Carolina lawmaker’s are voting on a bill to expand private school vouchers by $400 million, while making all family incomes eligible to apply.
Supporters argue the expansion would give more families opportunities to choose where their children attend school while opponents argue the bill would take profit away from under-funded public schools and increase investment in a private landscape, which not all students are accepted.
On Monday, Governor Roy Cooper declared a ‘state of emergency’ in an attempt to stop the ‘House 823 bill’ from passing the state legislature.
Cooper argues that the state of public education is “no less important” than other emergencies. He said that it’s clear Republican legislature is aiming to “choke the life out of public education.”
The North Carolina governor urged residents to take action to stop the damage that will set their schools back for a generation.
