78-Year-Old U.S. Citizen Charged for Espionage in China

His jailing is likely to further strain relations between China and the U.S.

A Chinese court has sentenced a 78-year-old U.S. citizen to life in prison on charges involving spying. John Shing-Wan Leung was arrested in the south-eastern city of suz-how two years ago by a local bureau of China’s counter-intelligence agency. Yesterday, he was found guilty of espionage, sentenced to life imprisonment and deprived of political rights for life. Heavy sentences such as this are relatively rare for foreign citizens. It is unclear where Leung was residing at the time of his arrest. However, his jailing is likely to further strain relations between China and the U.S.
