Four Horses Died At Churchill Downs Ahead Of The Kentucky Derby
Two of the deaths are not injury related and have not yet been determined as the causes are still pending necropsies.
Ahead of Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, four horses have died after running at Churchill Downs since last Thursday.
The famous track has a history of racing-related horse fatalities with a total of 43 deaths from 2016 to 2018, which marks the second highest among 25 tracks that reported horse fatalities.
Of the four deaths, one was euthanized after sustaining an injury during competition. Another horse was euthanized after breaking his hind leg during training.
The other two are not injury related and have not yet been determined as the causes are still pending necropsies.
Bloodwork and labs from both horses came back normal and teams are now testing the animal’s feed and supplements for irregularities.
