House of Representatives Vote to Pass GOP Plan for Raising Debt Ceiling

The bill will now proceed to the Senate for another round of voting and discussions.

Yesterday, House republicans introduced a plan to raise the debt ceiling and spending cuts cleared a significant hurdle. The debt limit has been an on-going debate between lawmakers for several months now. A bill was presented by the GOP, pushing against democrats. The bill would raise the debt limit by $1.5 trillion in exchange for cutting federal spending and imposing new work requirements on many recipients of food aid and welfare assistance. If passed, it would also eliminate a central tenet of President Biden’s 2022 ‘Inflation Reduction Act: Green Energy Tax Breaks’. Democrats argue that the debt ceiling can be raised without having to cut spending. The House voted in favor of the bill with a vote of 219 to 210. The bill will now proceed to the Senate for another round of voting and discussions.
