Shield Law Advances Through The S.C. House Of Representatives
S.C. has not been able to get the drugs necessary for lethal injections since its batch expired a decade ago.
The bill that could allow the lethal injection option to be revived in South Carolina’s options of execution, has advanced.
Earlier this year the S.120 bill passed through the Senate in a 39 to 5 vote. On Wednesday, the state’s House of Representatives passed the bill in a vote of 75 to 21.
At this time, S.C. has three methods of executing convicted inmates, including firing squad and the electric chair which are both on hold pending a court review for their legality.
The third one is lethal injection which cannot be performed without the drugs.
S.C. has not been able to get the drugs necessary for lethal injections since its batch expired a decade ago.
Businesses have refrained from providing the drugs due to backlash and fears of boycotting.
If passed, the new Shield Law would keep the drug provider’s name private to prevent public backlash.
