Proposed Bill Would Decrease Number Of School Districts In S.C. Counties

The overall goal would be to cut the number of districts from over 70 to 46.

A new bill is targeted at the number of school districts allowed in counties across South Carolina.

The H.4100 bill would require every county in the state to only be represented by one school district.

Eleven counties across S.C. currently have two or more districts. However, the bill would allow part of a county to be included in another neighboring county’s district.

The overall goal would be to cut the number of districts from over 70 to 46.

If the bill is passed, the shrinking process would have to be in place by July 1st of 2025.

A House Subcommittee held a hearing on the bill on Tuesday, but did not vote to advance it.
