These are our Carolina Kindness stories:
Rain was pouring and a tree feel through Nancy Mackins’ roof. She called her brother. Her brother not in the area, then called the local police department to check it out. Officer Chris Grigg was the officer to respond. Grigg tried to help by soaking up water and putting a tarp on the roof. The help didn’t stop there. Griggs says he kept thing about her home. There was much that needed repair. so he started calling around to neighbors. It was above and beyond what Mackins could have thought. Not only were the storm repairs made but things throughout the home such as cabinets, flooring and a new HVAC system. Items were donated and installed by volunteers. (This story was found thanks to the reporting of WBTV, Morgan Newell.)
A coach is inspired by a student’s daily struggle to get to school after walking in his shoes for a day. Leland Schipper is a soccer coach at a high school in Iowa. He recently called out a 15-year-old student for being late to practice, the teen challenged him to “do what i do” for one day. To the teen’s surprise, Coach Schipper took him up on that offer. MJ’s life revolvees around family school and soccer. The coach later wrote about it on Facebook about his misconceptions he writes, “While I knew MJ, and many kids face real obstacles, I was sure I was capable of doing what MJ does. By the end of the day, it was clear to me that MJ was right, I wasn’t.” The coach went on to document the day started at the bus stop at 6:30 am. It takes two buses to get to school by 7:40. that is 45 minutes before it starts. MJ pointed out there was no one else there yet and told me his choices are either to be this early, or to be 5 minutes late. After school MJ left something at home, so that was a two hour trip. Coach sat that one out. And the day wasn’t over, the two had yet another bus to catch for open gym from 8 to 9:30 p.m. There was another bus after practice. It was after 11 when they arrived at MJ’s apartment. There were nights when MJ didn’t make it to open gym, he would say he was tired and didn’t have a ride. Coach said he regrets some of his responses realizing now it’s a lot more complicated. He didn’t see that until now.
