Russia's main security service claims that the Wall Street Journal reporter was trying to gain state secrets.

An American reporter for the Wall Street Journal has been detained by Russian authorities who accuse him of spying.

Russia’s main security service claims that Evan Gershkovich was trying to gain state secrets.

The Wall Street Journal denied the allegations in a statement and demanded the immediate release of their trusted and dedicated reporter.

This is the first time an American journalist has been detained on accusations by Moscow of spying since the Cold War.

The arrest comes after U.S. authorities recently announced charges against a Russian National, Sergey Cherkasov, on accusations of him being a Russian spy.

A Russian district court in Moscow shared that Gershkovich will be detained until May 29th.
