New GPS Monitor System Is Being Tested To Track Certain Sex Offenders

A new device is being tested by the South Carolina Department of Probation, Parole, and Pardon.
Director of field program, Jerry Emberis, said instead of ankle monitors, his agency is using a wrist, bracelet device to monitor certain offenders. The GPS monitoring device is still in the early stages of testing.
Less than a year ago, Governor McMaster signed a bill to allow sex offenders in S.C. to seek removal from the state’s lifetime sex offender registry.
The bill creates state tiers for offenders and provides reasonable avenues for removal based on the applicable tier.

As of this year, Horry County has over 700 sex offenders and only 73 are being monitored or tracked.
