Alex Murdaugh is on trial for the murders of his wife, Maggie and youngest son, Paul. The defendant himself took the stand on Thursday.
During the defenses questioning, Murdaugh admitted that he lied to officers about his location before the murders.
The former attorney originally claimed that he never went to the kennels on the night of the killings, but a video that Paul recorded placed him at the scene where the murders took place. Murdaugh’s voice can be heard in the background of the tape. He claimed that he lied due to his addiction to pain pills causing him general paranoia.
Murdaugh broke down into tears several times on the stand as the defense addressed questions asking him to describe the murder scene.
During questioning, he admitted to the financial crimes he is facing and setting up the situation where he requested for someone to shoot him and lied about it to law enforcement.
Cross-examination continues on Friday.
