Democrats And Republicans Push For A Legislation United
The 'Kids' Online Safety Act' is aimed at protecting young people that use the internet.
Democrats and Republicans came together in a renewed push to pass federal legislation.
The ‘Kids’ Online Safety Act’ is aimed at protecting young people that use the internet. With an unusual bipartisan unity, lawmakers on the Senate Judiciary Committee used a hearing to blame ‘Big Tech’ companies for blocking attempts by Congress to regulate their platforms.
The committee members would consider the many bills aimed at tech regulation regarding privacy, sexual exploitation, and mental health crises among young Americans.
Testimony from children safety advocates and industry leaders were discussed but the committee did not hear from witnesses that stand for the tech companies.
The legislation would require that social media platforms provide minors with options to protect their information, disable addictive product features, and opt out of algorithmic recommendations. It would also give parents control to monitor and place responsibility on the platforms to prevent harm to minors.
