Medicaid Review Begins Again In South Carolina
Previously due to the Federal COVID public health emergency, people were allowed to be added to Medicaid but could not be removed unless the resident either requested to be, died, or moved out of state.
For the first time in three years, South Carolina is set to begin reviewing residents eligibility for Medicaid.
During the pre pandemic era, the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reviewed Medicaid eligibility annually to determine who still qualifies. However, due to the Federal COVID public health emergency, people were allowed to be added to Medicaid but could not be removed unless the resident either requested to be, died, or moved out of state.
As the COVID emergency precaution comes to an end, states can resume reviewing and removing people as they see fit from Medicaid.
The HHS will take a year to carry out the review process starting April 1st through March of 2024 and will follow the guidance of its stakeholders and the federal government.
Nearly 300 thousand people could lose their coverage in the next year.
Review forms are scheduled to be mailed out to everyone currently on Medicaid on April 1st and residents will have 60 days to fill out and return it.
