Several Republican States Request To Terminate DACA
The states argued the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals' program is an illegal over-reach of executive power, and only Congress has the authority to grant unauthorized immigrants federal benefits.
Several Republican states requested for a Texas federal judge to shut down DACA.
Texas, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, South Carolina, West Virginia, and more have argued that the ‘Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals’ program is an illegal over-reach of executive power, and only Congress has the authority to grant unauthorized immigrants federal benefits.
Terminating DACA would prevent about 600 thousand “Dreamers” from renewing their deportation protections and work permits.
For years, the program has allowed immigrants lacking legal status who were brought to the U.S. as children, to work and reside in the country without fear of being deported.
It is unclear if the request will be fulfilled at this time or not. If approved, immigrants will no longer be able to renew their status.
The deadline for a decision is set for April 6th.
