The law will require ride-share companies such as Uber and Lyft, to install enhanced verification systems as well as ban the sale of materials designed to assist a passenger in identifying a ride-sharing vehicle to those without the approval of the company.

The legislation was proposed after a University of South Carolina student was murdered after climbing into a vehicle that claimed to be her Uber.

Samantha Josephson, was murdered in 2019 by Nathaniel Rowland who pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison. The bill was proposed in 2021 and has now been signed into law.

Along with other new requirements, the Government Accountability Office now has to provide a report every two years on instances of sexual assault and abuse that occur to both ride-share drivers and passengers.
