Sesame Added To List Of Major Food Allergens

Adding the item to the list means foods containing sesame will have to follow the food allergen regulatory requirements including regards to labeling and manufacturing.

On the first day of 2023, sesame will be added to the list of major food allergens defined by law.

The newly added allergen is a result of the Food Allergy Safety, Treatment, Education, and Research Act that was signed into law in April of 2021.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been debating whether to add sesame seeds on the major food allergens list for a few years now.

Adding the item to the list means foods containing sesame will have to follow the food allergen regulatory requirements including regards to labeling and manufacturing.

1.6 million Americans suffer a life-threatening sesame allergy. Sesame is in dozens of ingredients and thanks to the “FASTER Act” it will now be subject to be cited with an allergy warning.
