NASA’s Orion dart has broken the distance record set by Apollo 13 for a mission involving a spacecraft intended to carry humans to travel deep into space and back to Earth.

Orion is a part of NASA’s Artemis mission to transport humans to the moon and eventually planet Mars. Apollo 13 set the previous record with 248,655 miles in 1970.

The Orion capsule travelled nearly 270 thousand miles from Earth exceeding the previous record by over 27 thousand miles.

Orion reached the moon on November 21st marking it as the first capsule to visit since Apollo 13.

NASA said that the program will lead the way to establish the first long-term human presence on the moon.
