Mexico Announced Plans For Renewable Energy Targets

The goal is to protect more of Mexico's forests, increase electric vehicle usage, and to cut down on methane emissions from its oil, and gas drilling sectors.

On Monday, Mexico announced plans that would impact the amount of power it generates from renewable sources of energy by 2030.

The goal is to profoundly increase the amount of power generated by wind, solar, geothermal, and hydropower. The clean energy targets were publicly shared at the United Nations climate change conference also known as COP27.

Mexico’s plan aims to generate over 40 gigawatts of power from the renewable sources of energy. The country is the 13th largest global emitter of greenhouse gases and one of the few that updated its plan to reduce emissions at COP27.

It pledged to reduce by 35% from usual business levels by the end of the decade as well as doubling its spending on clean energy.

By 2030, the goal is to protect more of Mexico’s forests, increase electric vehicle usage, and to cut down on methane emissions from its oil, and gas drilling sectors.
