Delay Of Refunds To Passengers Costs Airlines Millions

Airlines are being forced to issue over $600 million in refunds to hundreds of thousands of passengers.

Since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been many flight changes or cancelations.

Currently, airlines are being forced to issue over $600 million in refunds to hundreds of thousands of passengers.

Last month, the department received 7,243 consumer complaints and one in every five were reported in regards to a refunding issue.

Federal regulators are cracking down on six airlines that bypassed rules which determine when refunds will be returned.

Due to the “extreme delay” of returning the refunds to passengers, the Department of Transportation is also issuing $7.25 million in fines against the airlines.

Including the fines, the overall total assessed amount for 2022 is $8.1 million. The total is a historical amount in civil penalties for the department’s consumer protection program.
