Voters Approve Extension Of 1% Sales Tax For Education In Horry County

Horry County Schools receive 80% of the money, Coastal Carolina University receives 13.3%, and Horry Georgetown Tech receives 6.7%.

The measure to renew a 1% sales tax for Horry County schools to make capital improvements, has been approved.

The measure passed with only 32% voting against.

Horry County Schools receive 80% of the money, Coastal Carolina University receives 13.3%, and Horry Georgetown Tech receives 6.7%.

As of June, over $950 million was collected from the “Penny Sales Tax.”

The money has been used for new schools, additions and renovations, paving, HVAC projects, roofing and canopy projects, technology, and other improvements.

The tax will now remain in effect for another 15 years.
