Scores Drop For Reading And Math In U.S. Studies Assessment

The assessment displayed the largest math score declines for 4th and 8th graders since 1990.

The National Assessment of Education progress displayed that 4th and 8th graders in the U.S. have fallen behind in reading and have had the biggest decline ever in math.

The drop could be a result from the Covid-19 pandemic affect on American children. The U.S. secretary of education, Miguel Cardona, explained that this should be a wake up call to double down efforts and improve education.

Cardona also urged schools to ensure that they are using funding from the Covid relief package passed in 2021 to boost student scores. He suggested that the widespread teacher shortages play a role as well and called on districts to up teachers pay competitively.
