Manchin’s Previous Proposal Has Been Denied
Tuesday evening, Senate Majority leader, Chuck Schumer announced the removal of energy provisions from the funding bill. 60 votes were needed for the motion to proceed. However, Republicans and progressives opposed the suggestion. Schumer agreed to attempt to pass a Joe Manchin drafted bill that would streamline the federal permitting process for energy projects including clean energy and fossil fuels. In exchange Manchin would vote for the Inflation Reduction Act. Manchin wanted a guaranteed approval of the mountain valley pipeline that would carry natural gas drilled in West Virginia to larger markets. This motion did not receive the 60 votes needed either. Climate leaders expressed that change is needed to laws regarding permitting of electrical transmission lines to bring new renewable energy onto the grid. However, they expressed that the approval of additional fossil fuel energy projects is not the way to go about it.
