Senate Advances Bill After Manchin Drops Plan

Tuesday, the Senate voted to take up a bill that would keep the Government funded through December 16th. The vote was on the verge of failing in result of the controversial permitting reform proposal inclusion. However, Joe Manchin dropped a request to include the proposal after it was criticized by Republicans and Democrats. Machin’s proposal would have expedited the permitting and environmental review process for energy projects which include a major pipeline that would cross through his home state of West Virginia. A final vote is needed on the stop-gap funding bill for Manchin’s next step. Senate minority leader Mitch McConnell described the proposal as a “poison pill” and stated he would oppose the vote. Neither party is willing to take blame for a shutdown and both are attempting to make their case to voters where they would be the majority.
