California Woman Charged For Fake Kidnapping
A California mother that faked her own kidnapping was exposed due to advances in DNA technology. Yesterday, 40-year-old, Sherri Papini, was sentenced to a year and a half in prison after she pleaded guilty to mail fraud and making false statements. In 2016 she was reported missing after she went out for a jog near her Shasta County home in Northern California. 3 weeks after, she was found injured and alone on a highway. She stated that she had been abducted and tortured by 2 Spanish speaking women who allegedly kept her chained in a closet, held at gunpoint and branded her with a heated tool. Paniini received more than $30 thousand from the state in victim compensation funds. An ex boyfriend admitted the kidnapping was a hoax after his DNA was discovered on her clothing. She was ordered to pay nearly $310 thousand in restitution. She stated to the judge that she was guilty of lying and dishonor and ready to repent and concede.
