Adan Syed A Chance For A New Trial
A motion by prosecutors to vacate the murder conviction of Adnan Syed was approved. Syed’s case was the subject of a hit podcast called “Serial”. He has maintained innocence while serving a life sentence after he was convicted in 1999 of first degree murder, robbery, kidnapping, and false imprisonment in connection to the killing of his ex girlfriend. The judge that made the decision to overturn the conviction, says she was encouraged by the fact that the investigation had cited material that was not properly presented to the defense attorneys at the time as well as two suspects that may have been improperly cleared. The judge has placed Syed under home detention with an ankle monitor, while the state’s attorney’s office chooses whether to drop his charges or try him again. Prosecutors have 30 days to make their decision.
