S.C. Senator Greg Hembree Introduces Legislation Surrounding Lethal Injection

South Carolina Senator Greg Hembree made an announcement after a judge blocked the state’s two methods of execution. The execution methods of the electric chair and firing squad were blocked after being deemed them unconstitutional. Hembree stated he plans to introduce legislation that would allow the state to resume executions by lethal injection. South Carolina’s supply of drugs for lethal injection expired in 2013. The Department of Corrections has attempted and failed to obtain new drugs but manufacturers told them they will not sell to South Carolina if their identities would be revealed. A shield law would protect their identities which could allow the state to procure the drugs and resume lethal injection. Without the drugs available, executions in South Carolina are on hold after the judge’s ruling.
