Portions of Times Square Designated as ‘Gun-Free Zones’
Parts of New York City’s Times Square will be considered a ‘gun-free zone’ after a new law goes into effect tomorrow. The law which was signed by Governor Kathy Hochul in July was in response to a controversial ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court which struck down a state law that restricted carrying a concealed handgun outside the home. The law outlines areas deemed ‘sensitive’ where firearm possession will be illegal which includes Times Square, government owned buildings, schools, health care facilities, places of worship and public transportation. People who carry a gun to those prohibited locations could be charged with a felony under the new law. Tomorrow, Times Square will be under emergency rules created by the New York Police Department to ensure guidelines are in place.
