Five U.S. Lawmakers Take Unannounced Trip to Taiwan

A group of United States lawmakers landed in Taiwan yesterday. On their trip, Senators Ed Markey of Massachusetts, Representatives John Garamendi and Alan Lowenthal of California, Don Beyer of Virginia and Amata Radewagen of American Samoa met with Taiwanese officials throughout the day yesterday. Their trip comes after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi became the highest-level U.S. official to visit Taiwan in 25 years last month. In response to this latest trip, China released a statement condemning the trip and has renewed military drills in the Taiwan strait.
