Brittney Griner’s Legal Team Files Appeal

WNBA Star Brittney Griner’s legal team has filed an appeal against a Russian court’s verdict which sentenced her to nine years behind bars for smuggling drugs into the country. Griner was detained in February after bringing vape cartridges containing cannabis oil into the country in her luggage and pleaded guilty to charges after saying that she accidentally packed them while in a hurry. The U.S. State Department says Griner is ‘wrongfully detained’ and officials have offered a potential prisoner swap with Russia for Russian Arms Dealer Viktor Bout and American Paul Whelan. Griner’s nine year sentence along with a $16,400 fine was issued on August 4th.
