Russia, U.S. Expected to Hold Talks of Prisoner Swap Involving Brittney Griner

Following yesterday’s verdict in the Brittney Griner trial, the United States and Russia are expected to hold talks over a prisoner swap. According to Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the Kremlin is ‘ready to discuss this topic, but within the framework of the channel that has been agreed by the presidents.’ According to Lavrov, there’s a channel that was agreed upon by both President Putin and President Biden and no matter what anyone says, that channel will remain in effect. Last month the United States proposed swapping notorious arms dealer Viktor Bout for Griner and Paul Whelan, a United States citizen who has been held in Russia since 2018.
