Biden Administration Offers Prisoner Swap with Russia
The Biden administration has offered a prisoner swap with Russia. If approved, convicted Russian arms trafficker Viktor Bout who’s serving 25 years in a U.S. Prison would be given back to the country in exchange for WNBA star Britney Griner and Paul Whelan. The plan to trade the prisoners received backing from President Biden after discussions since earlier this year and Biden’s support overrides opposition from the Department of Justice. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said “so far, there is no agreement on this issue.” Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced yesterday that the U.S. presented a ‘substantial proposal’ to Moscow ‘weeks ago’ for Whelan and Griner.
