House Passes Bill Protecting Same-Sex Marriages

Yesterday the House of Representatives passed a bill that would enshrine protections for same-sex marriage into federal law. The final vote was 267 to 157 with 47 Republicans joining Democrats to vote for the bill. In order for it to pass the Senate, at least 10 Republicans were needed to join Democrats to overcome the 60-vote filibuster. The bill called the ‘Respect for Marriage Act’ not only safeguards the right to same-sex marriage nationwide but also includes federal protections for interracial marriages and holds that a marriage must be recognized under federal law if it was legal in the state where it took place.
