Derek Chauvin Sentenced to 21 Years in Federal Prison

Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced in federal court yesterday to 21 years in prison. Chauvin previously pleaded guilty to violating George Floyd’s civil rights during his arrest on May 25th, 2020 when he knelt on Floyd’s neck for several minutes. The sentence will run concurrently with his state sentence of 22.5 years after he was convicted for second and third-degree murder as well as second-degree manslaughter. Chauvin told Floyd’s family he ‘wishes all the best’ for Floyd’s children during his remarks but did not offer an apology.
