WNBA Star Brittney Griner’s Trial Begins in Moscow

The trial for two-time Olympic Basketball gold medalist and WNBA star Brittney Griner began today in Moscow. Griner was arrested on February 17th at an airport in Moscow a week before Russia invaded Ukraine and her supporters say she was wrongfully detained and have called for her release several times as the war remains ongoing. Griner faces drug smuggling charges which can be punishable by up to 10 years in prison and was accused by a prosecutor of smuggling less than a gram of cannabis oil in her luggage. The second court hearing in the trial will take place on July 7th.
