Migrant Death Toll Rises in Tractor-Trailer Incident in San Antonio
Yesterday, the death toll in the tractor-trailer incident rose to 51 people… including 39 men and 12 women. On Monday, a man discovered the tractor-trailer that was found abandoned on a road in San Antonio. According to San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg this is ‘nothing short of a horrific human tragedy’ and an agent with Homeland Security Investigation said it was the ‘deadliest human smuggling incident in U.S. history.’ The deceased were migrants from Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. Sixteen survivors including 12 adults and four children were rushed to local hospitals suffering from heat stroke and exhaustion. It is unknown how long the victims inside had been dead. Two men, Juan Claudio D’Luna-Mendez and Juan Francisco D’Luna-Bilbao, were charged federally with “possession of a weapon by an alien illegally in the United States” in connection with the incident. It is unclear if they are among the three people detained earlier this week. Homeland Security officials and local police are investigating the deaths.
