SCOTUS Strikes Down New York Gun Law

In another Supreme Court decision, yesterday they struck down a New York gun law enacted over a century ago that places restrictions on carrying a concealed handgun. New York only issued public carry licenses when an applicant demonstrated a special need for self defense. The court voted 6-3 on striking down the bill that they ultimately believed ‘violated the constitution’. Their opinion changes framework lower courts will use moving forward while analyzing other gun restrictions. Almost a half dozen states have similar laws to New York’s including California, Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts and New Jersey. Twenty-five states allow people to carry concealed weapons in most public spaces without any permit, background check or safety training. President Biden said he is ‘deeply disappointed’ with the decision saying “this ruling contradicts both common sense and the Constitution, and should deeply trouble us all.”
