EU Recommends Candidate Status for Ukraine, Moldova
Ukraine’s bid to join the European Union received a boost today. During a speech in Brussels, the European Commission’s President Ursula von der Leyen said the commission recommends ‘that Ukraine is given candidate status.’ She added ‘In the view of the commission, Ukraine has clearly demonstrated the country’s aspiration and the country’s determination to live up to European values and standards.’ The commission also recommended candidate status for Moldova but not for Georgia until it meets further conditions. Leaders for the EU member states will meet for a summit next week to discuss its opinion. On average, the process to join the EU takes just under five years to complete.
