Today Marks Second Anniversary of George Floyd’s Death

Today marks the second anniversary of George Floyd’s death in Minneapolis. The city plans to unveil a George Perry Floyd square street sign at the intersection where former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on Floyd’s neck for over 9 minutes during his arrest. A vigil will follow the ceremony and Terrance Floyd, George’s brother will be in attendance. Later in the week, a festival and concert will take place at the intersection along with a gathering of families whose loved ones have died at the hands of police. Some of Floyd’s family members will be in attendance today as President Biden signs an executive order that requires new use-of-force rules for federal law enforcement. The order will also encourage local police departments to make similar changes. This comes after months of consultations with police professional groups and reform activists.
